Physical therapy helps children who are experiencing gross motor delays. Gross motor skills are those movements that require use of the larger muscles in the body, for example walking, running, sitting upright, throwing, and balancing. Our experienced physical therapists set goals and achievements for each child to help motivate the child and measure progress. In physical therapy some of the things children work on are: transitions through the developmental sequence, stretching and strengthening muscles, navigating obstacle courses that may have them walking on balance beams, climbing up stairs, or crawling through tunnels, jumping over and onto obstacles, and practicing throwing movements.
Occupational therapy focuses on developing a child’s fine motor skills or smaller movements. Some of the things children in occupational therapy may work on are their hand-eye coordination and the synchronization of their smaller muscles to develop and improve grasping skills and other reflexes. Writing skills, hand strength, and the ability to grasp and correctly use an object, for example holding and using a pair of scissors to cut small shapes, are concentrated on during a session.
Children who receive speech therapy learn the fundamentals of speech and language. Speech therapists work with children to improve receptive and expressive language skills, voice fluency, oral-motor difficulties, articulation, the pronunciation of words, how the child produces words, and speech structure.
Certified speech therapists can provide feeding therapy to children experiencing feeding and swallowing disorders including either the inability or unwillingness to eat specific foods. Treatment may include direct feeding, introducing different types and textures of foods, and oral-motor skill improvement.
We have highly trained and experienced teachers who work with children from 0 to 21 years of age. Specific goals are made for the needs of each individual child. Special educators work with children with learning disabilities, communication disorders, behavioral and emotional difficulties, and physical or developmental delays.
Our agency also has special educators who specialize in vision services. These vision therapies focus on helping children who have a variety of vision problems. Some of these visual diagnoses include blindness, legal blindness, strabismus, nystagmus, esotropia, exotropia, convergence insufficiency, difficulty tracking objects, and more.
Our qualified social workers help families to access services like Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Care at Home, and others that they may not have known about. Families with children experiencing behavioral difficulties and other disabilities learn how to help each other and improve the family dynamic.
Tender Age Pediatric Therapies is qualified to perform Early Intervention and School Age psychological evaluations as needed.
Our experienced Service Coordinators act as the liaisons between parents, school districts, and Suffolk County. The case Service Coordinator is the parents’ or guardians’ go-to for any questions about the child’s services.
Parent Child groups offer a social component that is important for your child to develop socialization skills. Group sessions help children learn by allowing them to copy their peers. Parent Child group programs are available for you and your child to take during the school year and over the summer. We have Mommy and Me group programs that are used to develop your child’s motor and social skills. Over the summer we offer preschool programs like Kindergarten Readiness and various speech groups. Please call the office at (631)-218-1545 for more information on our group classes.
At Tender Age Pediatric Therapies, our experienced evaluators are trained in the typical development of children and to assess the abilities of children who may be at risk of developmental delay. These children may need an intervention by a service provider in order to reach their full potential. Tender Age can provide evaluations in the areas of special education, psychological evaluations, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, and vision. Evaluations can be done through Suffolk County’s Early Intervention Program at no out-of-pocket cost to the family.
Tender Age is not a 4410 and we are unable to do preschool evaluations through your child’s home school district at this time. We can provide private evaluations for students that are 3-5 years old.
Tender Age does evaluations for a number of school districts. Please contact our office at (631)-218-1545 for more information.
To Ms. Tina, Ms. Joan, Ms. Karen and the entire staff at Tender Age! Our family can’t thank you enough for the amazing experience we have had since joining your team a year ago. Before Tender Age, we struggled to get Stephen in the car to attend therapy. After his first visit to see your gym, Stephen couldn’t wait to return and immediately started calling it “Ms. Angela’s Gym” because of the warm welcome we received. The entire staff goes above and beyond. Because of Stephen’s positive experience, it has had a significant impact on his progress. He looks forward to each and every therapy session and as an added bonus, it’s quite pleasant for the grownups in the waiting area! Everyone is so friendly; it is truly like one big happy family!
Thank you to everyone for your kindness and support and we are happy to be part of the Tender Age family!Kristina Berte
My son Troy has been getting services at Tender Age PT since 2006; at the time he was 13 years old. He was the first child to receive services at their new center. This year, at age 21 Troy is graduating and starting a new chapter in his life. Troy was diagnosed with Autism at age 3 and Apraxia at age 13. Without the services provided by the incredible staff at Tender Age PT, I truly feel that Troy would not be the young man he is today. He wasn’t always the easiest to work with; at times very behavioral. Everyone at the agency was patient, kind and supportive to the entire family. Their professionalism, creativity and determination assisted Troy to work thru many challenges. I asked Troy if there was anything else that he would like to add; he told me that he wanted to let everyone know that he is grateful for their hard work. Our family is eternally grateful to this agency and their staff. Roberta & Troy
Going to group at Tender Age was such a wonderful experience. The therapists were so wonderful with the kids, and also supportive of the parents. I can't thank you all enough! Aaron
